About Cal Pla Negre

Cal Pla Negre is a red wine from the D.O. Priorat, crafted by Celler Cal Pla. In the United States, it is marketed under the brand Mas d'en Compte Black Slate Porrera.

This is a small family-owned winery located in Porrera (Tarragona) that boasts a winemaking tradition dating back to 1814.

Cal Pla Negre is produced using grapes from the garnacha, cariñena, and cabernet sauvignon varieties, sourced from 10-year-old vines facing north-west. The vineyards are planted on terraces, on slate soils at an altitude of 450 metres.

The initial step in crafting Cal Pla Negre involves manual harvesting. Once at the winery, after macerating the grapes with their own skins, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature.

Finally, Cal Pla Negre matures for 12 months in used French and American oak barrels.

2022

Cal Pla Negre 2022 unveils intense aromas of raspberry jam and dark fruits such as cassis. On the palate, it reveals flavours of well-ripened dark fruits, complemented by spicy notes and a hint of minerality. Its texture is smooth and voluminous, due to well-integrated tannins. This wine offers a good persistence, leaving delightful sensations of fruit in liqueur. Its profile is fluid, making it highly approachable and pleasing to the palate.
2021

Cal Pla Negre 2021 unveils an intense fruity character, accentuated by compote-like dark fruit notes such as plums, blackberries, and blueberries, all enshrouded in a nuanced maturity. Upon tasting, this red wine exhibits a restrained and meaty personality, with tannins that blend harmoniously with each sip. Its balance is striking, melding a robust acidity with an inviting freshness that encourages continued enjoyment. The finish is lingering, leaving a concentrated and rich impression.
2018

Cal Pla Negre 2018 is a concentrated red wine. The nose is pleasant with notes of black fruit, toast and spice. The palate is fresh, with minerality and hints of wild flowers. Direct and serious. Meaty, intense and sweet. Well-polished tannins. Long and persistent finish.
2017

Cal Pla Negre Magnum 2017 is a mature and robust red wine, boasting the fruity and rustic character imparted by the grape varietals and the spicy nuances from the oak aging. On the nose, it exhibits well-defined aromas, featuring hints of raspberry, black fruits, cassis, and mineral notes. The palate fuses these flavors with an underlying mineral and spiced complexity. It has a smooth texture, substantial body, and well-integrated tannins. The finish is notably persistent.
2016 Cal Pla Negre 2016 is a red wine with a medium to full body and a good fruitiness. In a vintage marked by the heat, the aromas are distinguished by an extra point of ripeness and concentration in the mouth.
2013 Dry, full-bodied, very meaty and tasty. With well integrated tannins and good acidity. It is balanced and persistent. Aftertaste of ripe fruit.
