Gastronomy and wine are deeply linked and make a lovely pairing that has been enjoyed throughout history in different cultures and regions of the world. Both elements complement each other and enhance flavours and culinary experiences in a unique way. So it is not surprising that many culinary experts have turned to the world of wine. Jeff Coutelou, winemaker and former professor at a Parisian hotel school, is a clear example of the fine line between food and wine. Located north of Béziers, in Languedoc-Roussillon (France), he aims to reflect the authentic flavours of Languedoc. Using minimal intervention in the vineyard and in the winery and avoiding any external additives that could change the final result, his wines ooze naturalness.
With a total of 15 hectares on mostly clay-limestone soils, he produces natural wines like this Mas Coutelou Blanc. A blend of Macabeo and Grenache Gris from two different vintages from old, low-yielding vines surrounded by olive trees and other fruit trees. He uses real peasant agriculture and has held organic certification since 1987 (one of the pioneers in Languedoc-Roussillon). In the winery, spontaneous fermentation is carried out with native yeasts only and then aged for 10 months in concrete tanks.
Considering that both gastronomy and wine are sensory experiences, when combined well they become a most gratifying pleasure. And with this objective in mind, Jeff makes Mas Coutelou Blanc, an easy-drinking natural white wine that goes well with almost anything.
