About Martín Códax Con da Moura

The village of Medeiro, located to the west of the D.O. Monterrei, has always maintained a long and fruitful relationship with wine. The origins of this connection date back 400 years, when the first records can be found. According to legend, at that time, a moura (a mythical being with pale skin and platinum blonde hair who resides underground or underwater) decided to settle in the Muro de Medeiros, an archaeological site from the second Iron Age (situated near the village) where ancient rock wine presses have been discovered. There, this mythical creature - a common figure in Galician mythology - delighted in observing the valley and the mountain slopes. However, this beauty lacked just one thing: the vineyard. Therefore, before departing, and as a gesture of gratitude, the moura offered the vines as a gift, thus beginning a long-standing tradition that persists to this day. A living testament to this legend is the wine Martín Códax Con da Moura, a single-variety godello aged on lees. 
 
Martín Códax Con da Moura hails from Bodeguiña, Porto Lobos, and Rabo Lagarto, three distinctive plots spread between the valley and the slope, the two areas that comprise the D.O. Monterrei. The combination of these terrains, rich in granite, sand, and clay soils, constitutes one of the major attractions of this wine. Specifically, Martín Códax Con da Moura is cultivated in the southeast of Ourense, very near the border with Portugal, in a transitional zone between the Atlantic and continental climates. This contrast between hot, dry summers and cold winters, where, compared to the rest of the Galician territory, there is a lower amount of precipitation, adds to its uniqueness. Finally, Martín Códax Con da Moura ferments in oak vats and stainless steel tanks, culminating with approximately half a year of ageing on lees.
