About Los Frailes Naturel
According to the French writer and poet Jean de la Fontaine, “An artisan is known by their work.”
When it comes to Los Frailes Naturel we don’t need many pointers or labels to realise that behind this wine is Casa de los Frailes, one of the pioneering Spanish wineries when it comes to organic and biodynamic vineyard cultivation and home to this natural red wine, made without adding any sulphites. A single sip of this red wine is enough to recognise this company’s unmistakable style. It is one of the oldest in the country and lies in Vals dels Aforins, in the southeast of Spain, in the D.O. Valencia. That touch that makes it so special began in early 2000, when siblings María José and Miguel Velázquez took the reins of this business that has been run by their family since the eighteenth century. Since then, total respect for the land and minimal intervention in the winery are the things that underpin all their work on a daily basis.
Thanks to this, Los Frailes Naturel can be felt and tasted to the fullest without any masks, free from any influence that could hide it, and highlighting the unique features of the plots where the Monastrell variety grows. All these vineyards are planted at an altitude of 650 metres above sea level, on the property’s most calcareous soils (made up of 130 hectares). These soils are extremely white and poor, with very low yields, and hardly any sulphites are used. This trend has shown that removing chemical products promotes the appearance of tannins in the wine, a natural protective barrier that saves Los Frailes Naturel from any changes in the cellar.
Vinification, which takes place in concrete tanks, is still carried out in the wine presses built by the founders of the winery: the Jesuit order that was expelled by Charles III in the 18th century. To this day these lagares are still used by the Velázquez family, achieving a much purer wine, without notes that cover the purity of the grape (which would happen if it were vinified in barrels). By contrast, the concrete is much cleaner and more sober than the wood, which adds notes to the wine. The entire Los Frailes Naturel production process is manual: from the grape harvest to bottling. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts. It is lightly filtered and clarified, maintaining all the purity of Los Frailes Naturel.
Finally, Los Frailes Naturel is bottled and released for sale for a modest price that does not even come close to covering the love and care this red wine is made with.

2021 | Los Frailes Naturel 2021 is a succulent red with a raspberry hue, vibrant and forthright. On the nose, it is powerful, adorned with fruity (blackberry) and floral (violet) accents. The palate experiences a robust yet exceedingly pleasant, congenial, and light body, rendering it eminently quaffable. Fruit-laden flavors culminate in a tasty and enduring finish. |
