Laus Blanco Chardonnay

Laus means ‘praise, commendation, esteem’. This word, which comes from Latin, has been chosen as the name for this winery in the south of the D.O. Somontano, in Barbastro, Huesca (northeastern Spain).

This area, at the foot of the Pyrenees, has historically been home to the perfect conditions: suitable altitude (between 350 and 400 metres above sea level), contrasting climate (dry and with little rainfall) and exceptional soils (limestone and stony, with gypsum). Thanks to this, great wines are produced, like Laus Blanco Chardonnay.

Laus Blanco Chardonnay is a single-variety wine made from grapes grown on the 85 hectares of the Torre Fiero estate. This plot, located 1.5 km from the winery, was planted between 2000 and 2007. This variety is the queen of the denomination, introduced in the area by the Lalanne winery, who brought it directly from Bordeaux as a solution to the phylloxera attack. Once the grapes are ripe, it is time for the harvest (which takes place at night). This allows the grapes to be harvested and transported at low temperatures, which guarantees their good condition.

They are then taken to the winery, a new three-area building, which is fully integrated into the natural surroundings. Here, in the first room, the Laus White Chardonnay grape clusters are received and undergo a cold maceration. This process, which lasts a few hours, is mainly aimed at extracting aromas and giving body and structure to the must. After this extraction, the wine is racked (where it is cleaned by decanting) and Laus White Chardonnay is ready to ferment in double isothermal tanks at a controlled temperature.

Finally, Laus White Chardonnay goes directly to the third room, where it is bottled and ready to be tasted. Undoubtedly the best tribute anyone could make.
