About Keermont Vineyards Steepside Syrah
The Keermont winery was founded in 2013 when Mark and Monica Wraith moved from Gauteng (in the north of South Africa) to Stellenbosch in the south. This is where, less than 30 minutes from the centre of this university town, they bought two adjoining estates in the Blaauwklippen valley, surrounded by the Helderbeg and Stellenboschberg mountain ranges and crossed by the Blaauwklippen river. In short: an enviable location where very unique wines are made, like this Keermont Vineyards Steepside Syrah.
As you can imagine, Keermont’s terrain is very diverse in terms of soils and altitudes. The Keermont Vineyards Steepside Syrah wine is made using grapes from vineyards planted on the steep slopes of the Helberg mountain range, at an altitude of 300 metres. These vines are more exposed to the sun than the vines near the river, and the soil is predominantly clay loam. Both of these factors result in wines with a lot of character and strength.
The grapes are harvested by hand and after a meticulous selection, they are vinified separately. For red wines made at Keermont, the winemaking process involves 3-4 week fermentations, with subsequent maceration in an open tank with up to two gentle pump-overs per day. Finally Keermont Vineyards Steepside Syrah is moved to French oak barrels, where it ages for 20 months before being bottled unfiltered.
Keermont Vineyards Steepside Syrah is not made every year. To be more precise, this red is part of a very exclusive range with a Single Vineyards label from the South African Wine Industry Information & Systems NPC (SAWIS). This guarantees that these bottles don’t contain wine from any other vineyards. As we well know, the plants don’t act the same way every year. This is why a glass of Keermont Vineyards Steepside Syrah is a special occasion, not to be missed.
