About Joan d'Anguera L'Hostal
Joan d'Anguera L'Hostal is a biodynamic, barrel-aged red wine made with the Cariñena variety in the D.O. Montsant (Catalonia) by the Joan d'Anguera winery.
Joan d'Anguera is a family winery known for being pioneers in planting international varieties in the highest parts of Montsant (Tarragona). Since 2012, under the leadership of brothers Joan and Josep Anguera, the winery has been run according to organic and biodynamic principles and their wines are known for being fresh, pure and fragrant.
The grapes used to make the Joan d'Anguera L'Hostal wine come from the l'Hostal estate, where there was a roadside hostel over 80 years ago; hence the name. A total of 2 hectares of old vines aged over 60 years old and planted in loamy, calcareous and sandy soil. They grow alongside olive trees, almond trees and other Mediterranean fruit trees. Biodynamic agriculture is used and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.
The Joan d'Anguera L'Hostal grapes ferment without destemming in concrete tanks with native yeasts and an 18-day maceration. The wine then ages for 36 months in used, 225-litre French oak barrels. Finally it is bottled without filtering or clarifying and it rests for 12 months in the winery.
The powerful Cariñena variety is at its most balanced in this Joan d'Anguera L'Hostal wine. A wonderful Montsant with perfectly balanced fresh fruit and silky tannins.
2014 | Joan d'Anguera L'Hostal 2014 is a smooth red wine with deep aromas of red fruit, herbal notes and balsamic touches. On the palate it is enveloping, fresh and powerful. A medium-bodied wine with velvety tannins and characteristic mineral touches from the Montsant area. |
