About Huno Reserva

There are those who search for the perfect land on well-trodden maps, within familiar denominations. Pedro Mercado, however, starts from the notion that comfort does not produce great wines. This Madrid-born professor of oenology and viticulture at the Polytechnic spent two whole years traveling across Spain, covering miles and treading terroirs, in pursuit of a vineyard with such a wild soul that it would justify starting a project from scratch. His search did not conclude in the north, but in a small village in Extremadura near Mérida. There, he discovered a place he considers magical, Pago de los Balancines, a corner where sunsets stop your pulse and the Atlantic wind whispers Portuguese memories.

To grasp the brilliance of what happens in this winery, one must glance sideways at its surroundings. The DO Ribera del Guadiana, a denomination of origin that achieved its identity and quality seal in 1999, sprawling across Cáceres and Badajoz, is a marvellous and vast region where 63% of the production is red wine. Primarily, we are accustomed to encountering young reds made from tempranillo, which, truth be told, surprise with their unbeatable quality-price ratio. They are straightforward, honest, and enjoyable wines. But Pedro Mercado saw beyond the everyday nature of the area. He saw that in this Extremaduran piedmont, by treating the vineyards with the obsessive care of a botanical garden, it was possible to defy vinicultural gravity and craft aged reds capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with the country's great classics.

The magic of this landscape lies in a subtle climatic trick. Although we are in a region with a continentalised Mediterranean matrix, with clayey and stony soils that hold their own during the harshest months, the vineyard receives the constant embrace of Atlantic air currents entering from the nearby Portuguese border. This cool air acts as a natural thermostat, bestowing cool nights that slow down grape ripening. The result is fruit blessed by the southern sun, yet with surprising acidity and inner freshness.

Huno Reserva is the mature and sophisticated reflection of this philosophy of life. To shape it, they eschew conventional norms, opting for a blend with an overwhelming personality: the deep colour and untamed soul of garnacha tintorera, the classic structure of tempranillo, and the vibrant, almost electric touch of graciano. After fermenting with the patience demanded by the terroir, the wine is laid to rest for a lengthy 18 months in French oak barrels. This is not an ageing process to mask the fruit, but to tame the tannins, polish the edges, and meld the landscape into a velvety and majestic texture.

When you uncork Huno Reserva, you discover a complex, mature red full of layers. A serious wine, yet dangerously easy to drink, designed for sitting down to chat, lighting the fire, or enjoying a fine piece of meat while allowing it to open up in the glass.

2018

Huno Reserva 2018 reveals a deep garnet hue in the glass, inviting exploration. On the nose, it astonishes with a complexity where aromas of fruits such as cherries and ripe blackberries intertwine, accompanied by subtle hints of sweet spices that evoke vanilla and cinnamon, along with a faint breeze of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is silky and enveloping, with a medium body that balances sweetness and acidity in perfect harmony. The tannins feel polished and pleasant, leaving a persistent and agreeable sensation that entices further enjoyment. This wine is particularly commendable for its elegance and balance, characteristics that the 2018 vintage enhances, making it a remarkable choice for those seeking a well-rounded and accessible red.
