About Eremitas Antão do Deserto
Eremitas Antão do Deserto is an organic white wine aged in a cement vat and made by Mateus Nicolau de Almeida in the Portuguese Douro region with the native Rabigato variety.
In 2015, Mateus Nicolau de Almeida left the Muxagat family project to set up his own in Vila Nova de Foz Côa (Douro). In his quest to reflect the authenticity of the variety and the soils they grow in, as well as the altitude and exposures, he produces a collection of three Rabigato wines vinified in the same way but grown in three different sub-regions.
The Rabigaro variety grapes used to make the Eremitas Antão do Deserto wine grow in a deep shale soil near a stream. These vines lie at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level and are cultivated using organic agriculture and biodynamic practices.
In the winery, the Eremitas Antão do Deserto grapes are macerated in a “calcatórium” (granite basin) for 3 hours. They are then pressed in a vertical press and, using gravity, the must begins to ferment spontaneously in cement tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine remains there for 12 months.
With a great knowledge of the Douro, Mateus likes to reflect the personality of this wine region. The Eremitas Antão do Deserto wine is proof of this. Like a hermit from the desert, this wine reveals all the light it has been hiding whilst “meditating in its cave”.
2017 | Eremitas Antão do Deserto 2017 is a white wine with sweet citrus aromas and acacia flowers. On the palate it is light, fresh and elegant. A wine with a brilliant acidity over a deliciously mineral background. |
