About Château Musar
Château Musar is an ecological, barrel-aged red wine made by Château Musar in the Bekaa Valley (Lebanon) with the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Cariñena red varieties.
Château Musar was set up by Gaston Hochar in 1930 when, having spent time learning in Bordeaux, he realised the great potential of the fertile Bekaa valley, which had been cultivated centuries earlier by the Phoenicians and Romans. His theory was confirmed when in 1979, his house wine was chosen as the best wine at the Bristol Wine Fair. Ever since then, the Musar family has continued to make their wines in the same way.
Château Musar comes from old vines lying 100 metres above sea level and planted on very rugged gravel and limestone soils. The area has a continental climate with big temperature contrasts. The vines have very low yields of between 15 and 35hl per hectare, but the berries are highly concentrated. Ecological agriculture is used and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.
Each of the varieties used to make Château Musar is vinified separately. First, they ferment in cement tanks at a constant temperature below 30ºC for 6 months. Then they are transferred to Nevers oak barrels and the different wines are mixed after 12 months. Finally it rests in the bottle for 4 years before being released for sale.
Château Musar is a red wine that perfectly showcases how wine is made in Lebanon. An explosion of intense and very attractive ripe fruit.
