About GR 65-5
The Camino de Santiago is undoubtedly known for being the oldest, most popular and busiest route in the old continent. It is made up of various Christian pilgrimage routes that originated in medieval times, with the aim of reaching the tomb of the apostle James in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain). However, alongside this main route, there were other routes that started from different regions within the peninsula and, as the Reconquista progressed, these were used by the inhabitants of the new areas under Christian rule. One of them, the GR 65-5, is a path that the apostle himself used to go from Compostela to Tarragona to sail to Rome. An ancient route from Roman times that linked the cities of Tarraco (Tarragona) and Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza) and has now become a Gran Recorrido (a path that is part of a European network of paths over 50 kilometres) for hiking and a great way to get to know the areas it passes through on foot. Casa Gran del Siurana, the project that the Castillo de Perelada Empordà winery runs in the birthplace of the D.O.Q. Priorat (Catalonia), takes advantage of the GR brand to create wines from the most important D.O.’s along these routes. So it is not surprising that the GR 65-5 was one of the paths they got their inspiration from.
After passing the city of Tarragona among others, the Prades Mountains and the Sierra de la Llena, the GR65-5 crosses the Montsant Natural Park and this is where GR 65-5 is born. A red wine made with the Samsó (Cariñena) and Garnacha Tinta varieties from old vines within the D.O. Montsant that are cultivated in a way that takes care of the environment. Once the grapes reach the winery, they are selected and destemmed, and vinification is carried out with medium maceration and fermentation at a constant temperature of 24ºC in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in oak barrels before being bottled.
So, like its brother GR-174, GR 65-5 is a true reflection of the place it comes from. A fresh, silky and balanced red wine that takes you hiking through the rugged, charming and unique Montsant mountain range.
