About Badenhorst The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc

While the hermitage or cinsault variety has long been the star of the South African wine industry, in the last two decades its prominence has waned in favor of other equally distinguished varieties such as chenin blanc. The winery that has truly harnessed its potential is undoubtedly A.A. Badenhorst, a viticultural venture owned by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst who have revived an abandoned winery to produce quality wines in the renowned Swartland of Coastal Region appellation in South Africa.

Their wine Badenhorst The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc is made from old vines of chenin blanc planted in 1968 that are grown and ripened on the Kalmoesfontein estate. Sustainable farming practices are employed, and the grapes are hand-picked at the optimal point of ripeness. Afterward, in the winery, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, and the resulting must spontaneously ferments with indigenous yeasts. Finally, the wine is aged for 12 months in foudres.

Under the moniker "The Golden Slopes"—alluding to the vast expanses of yellow granite found in the vineyards—Badenhorst The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc is a delightful wine with a taut and mineral expression of chenin blanc.

Badenhorst The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc 2019 is a white wine characterized by aromas of white fruit, citrus undertones, and herbaceous hints. On the palate, it is fresh, vibrant, and exhibits a distinct minerality. This wine boasts a vigorous acidity, a seamless progression, and a prolonged finish with chalky nuances.
