About Azul y Garanza Suelo Vivo Tinto

Although in the renowned fable of "The Grasshopper and the Ant" the grasshopper leads an idyllic life while the diligent ant toils away, in reality, this insect engages in far more than just singing in the sunshine. Fulfilling crucial roles in nature such as pollinating flora, decomposing organic matter, and pest control are innate daily tasks it dutifully performs. The dynamic trio behind the winery Azul y Garanza in the Navarrese town of Carcastillo (Spain), namely Maria, Fer, and Dani, certainly do not underestimate their contribution to our ecosystem. So much so that they champion their significance through their innovative Suelo Vivo line, a collection of minimally intervened wines adorned with a playful illustration of a grasshopper on the label, born from their profound commitment to biodiversity.

Grounded in regenerative agriculture, a cultivation approach that bolsters soil health through the adoption of sustainable long-term management practices and integrates livestock into agricultural systems to enhance nutrient cycling, pest and disease control, and soil fertility, they introduce Azul y Garanza Suelo Vivo Tinto, a monovarietal Garnacha from 100% organic vineyards situated in the northern reaches of the Bardenas Reales (Navarra). This unique semi-desert natural landscape, both arid and eroded, has been protected as a natural park and a UNESCO biosphere reserve since the year 2000. For this wine, they turn to vines with an average age of 20 years, rooted in clay-limestone soils at an altitude of 400 meters. Upon arrival at the winery, the town's revived old cooperative, a philosophy of minimal intervention is maintained where the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks. Subsequently, the wine is left to mature in these same vessels for 6 months, and finally, bottling occurs after a gentle clarification and without filtration.

Azul y Garanza Suelo Vivo Tinto is more than just a wine; it's a tribute to natural agricultural life. A Garnacha that pledges allegiance to the biodiversity of the vines and symbolizes the vitality of the ecosystem. Light, juicy, and refreshing, once tasted, you will cease to underestimate the power of the grasshopper.
