About Aroa Mutiko

Aroa Mutiko is a natural Grenache wine produced by the Aroa winery in the D.O. Navarra, in northeastern Spain.

As the name suggests, (mutiko means ‘boy’ in Basque) this is a young red wine, with only six months in oak barrels, where the aim is to show both the variety and the soil. In principle, this is the main objective of this winery (founded in 2004 by the Vintae group), where they want to produce wines that express the identity of the place where the grapes grew. These vineyards, which are completely organic and untouched by chemical products, grow in Tierra Estella, one of the five zones the D.O. Navarra is divided into. There, under the protection of the Urbasa and Andía mountain ranges, vines are grown between the villages of Grocín and Zurucuáin, in the Yerri valley. The cool, calcareous clay soils of the area, together with the Mediterranean climate, are perfect for producing high quality, very expressive Grenache grapes, which can be used to make artisan wines with minimal intervention. “Nature is the best winemaker. No one knows better than her the rhythm and cycles required by the grapes to give us the best of themselves with each harvest.”

Harvest begins in mid-October. After being picked by hand, the grapes are quickly taken to the winery. This building has been constructed on two levels to create different heights to work with. This means that both the must and the wine are moved by gravity, maintaining the quality of both. This concern for excellence begins very early, in the field, where the grapes pass over a sorting table to select only the best. Once the selection has finished, Aroa Mutiko is processed and placed into the fermentation tanks, where the yeasts will start to work. This whole process, which takes a few days, is carried out at a temperature of 23°C. After this, Aroa Mutiko spends 12 days in contact with the skins. During this process, where the main objective is to extract colour, there are two daily pump-overs (to make sure that this happens). Finally, Aroa Mutiko is aged for approximately half a year in barrels to achieve a level of character and body (despite its youth).

Aroa Mutiko 2020 is a concentrated red wine with a cherry colour and violet hues. Clean. The nose is complex, frank and elegant. Very clean, with aromas of red fruits, liquorice and spices. The palate is sophisticated and warm with medium-bodied and medium acidity. Smooth and well-integrated tannins. Red fruits, pepper. Well balanced.
