About Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro

Gerardo Méndez is synonymous with the quintessential albariño. There is no room for any doubt.

This white wine is the flagship production of this century-old winery in the D.O. Rías Baixas, whose history is inextricably linked to that of this denomination established in 1988. During those years, seizing the momentum of the region, Gerardo Méndez Lázaro took the opportunity to introduce to the world, under his own name, the wine that had been crafted by his family for centuries (the earliest records date back to 1790) in the Valle del Salnés, a sub-region of the denomination. Right here, in the village of Meaño (between the Ría de Arousa and Pontevedra), this lineage — which continues with Encarna and Manuel Méndez — persists in both cultivating the ancient vineyards and sowing the seeds for the future. In the case of Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro, the grapes come from young vines, ranging from 5 to 50 years old, which are still tended to in the traditional manner. Both in this aspect and in the subsequent vinification, the family has aimed to remain cautious, as they are determined not to lose that "popular heritage" that Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro retains today. As for the terroir, the Valle del Salnés is characterized by being the flattest area, with abundant rocky and granitic soils.

In the case of Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro, the grapes, trained on a trellis system, are harvested and taken to the winery, where they are destemmed. Following this, the next stage of the harvest involves a pre-fermentation maceration to extract the maximum amount of aromas and enhance the flavour of the variety. Afterwards, Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro is pressed to obtain the must, which is then left to settle in the cold to clarify it and allow the suspended particles to fall to the bottom of the tank. Once clarified, Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro is racked into stainless steel tanks and begins to ferment with native yeasts. Finally, for several months, Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro is left in contact with its lees before being bottled.

At Gerardo Méndez, they are experts in cultivating the albariño grape. No one compares. We doubt there are many wines like Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro. A textbook albariño!
