Venus La Figuera is a red wine made by the Venus La Universal winery using the Garnacha Tinta variety in the D.O. Montsant.

Sara Pérez (Mas Martinet) and René Barbier (Clos Mogador), both children of prestigious Priorat winemaking families, embark on their own adventure in Montsant with Venus La Universal. A project that began in a small, old vineyard plot in 1999 with the aim of restoring the natural balance of the grape using organic methods and optimising resources and energy in vineyards, the winery and logistics. The Venus La Figuera red wine comes from one of the highest plots in the municipality of La Figuera (Tarragona). It consists of vineyards owned by the Cooperative of the same town that Pérez and René can use to make their own wines in exchange for winemaking advice.

The Venus La Figuera Garnacha variety is planted in clay-calcareous soils at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Thanks to a Mediterranean climate with continental influences, the grapes ripen over a long period of time which results in a high concentration of sugar. The harvest is carried out manually and the grapes are selected in the vineyard.

The Venus La Figuera grape is processed whole and with some stems. It macerates and ferments with native yeasts for a month in wooden vats and open 500-litre barrels. It then ages in amphorae for 18 months.

Venus La Figuera is a red wine that expresses the Garnacha variety in its most natural form.

Sara Pérez is one of today’s most prominent names of the Spanish wine scene. Part of the renowned Pérez Ovejero family, her father José Luis led the Priorat revolution back in the 80s, and she runs the Venus la Universal winery, in Montsant with her partner René Barbier Jr. A cool, young winery that works ecologically and sustainably to produce authentic terroir wines.

Montsant is situated in the province of Tarragona, surrounding the DOQ Priorat. Although a young Denominación de Origen, Monstant is located in a land with a large history in winemaking. The wines, mostly reds, are typically made with Grenache and Carignan grapes and are authentic, wild and artisanal. Wines produced in this region are usually extremely good value given the high quality.
