About Shafer TD9
For some it is a dream, for others it is a dare... Lots of people say they want to run away from the hustle and bustle of life. However, few actually swap their busy cosmopolitan lives for somewhere rural. In 1972 John Shafer took the plunge. He left his hectic job as a publicist in Chicago and moved to Napa Valley, California (USA) to start a new career in the world of wine. He bought an estate in the Stags Leap area and began the arduous task of replanting the existing vines, which dated back to 1920, expanding the vineyard to a total of 50 acres. And although this daring soul had never grown grapes or made wine before, he managed to turn his Shafer Vineyards project into a true “Parkerian” winery that now offers excellent wines with an international style.
Today it is John’s son, Doug Shafer, who runs the estate and in honour of the spirit of risk and adventure that still guides the winery, he makes TD9, a red wine from his vineyards in the AVA Napa Valley that blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The grapes are respectfully cultivated without fertilisers or pesticides and the harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness. In the winery, the grapes are carefully selected and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for 20 months in French oak barrels.
Based on Doug’s idea that “the quality of wines is determined by their fruity power”, Shafer TD9 is presented as a powerful wine born in the heart of Napa Valley.
2018 |
Shafer TD9 2018 is a concentrated red wine with an attractive garnet purple colour. The nose reveals expressive notes of blueberries, blackberries and plums accompanied by hints of potpourri, dried herbs and tar. The palate is powerful, complex and harmonious. A medium to full-bodied wine with ripe tannins and elegant acidity. The finish is convincing with its wonderful length and delicious minerality. |
