About Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva
Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva is a red wine from D.O. La Rioja, produced by Bodega Rioja Alta in Haro, one of the areas with the highest concentration of wineries in the world.
Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva is a great wine from La Rioja, here they only produce some vintages that are considered extraordinary.
The wine is a coupage of Tempranillo (95%), Graciano (3%) and Mazuelo, produced from their own old vines that are more than 40 years old and planted in the Riojan town of Rodezno.
There are farmhouses with very poor, limestone soils that have a low yield production, very loose bunches and small grapes, but they are of a great quality.
A great wine is born from a great selection, and in this case the selection began with the vines. The harvest is done by hand and they select the best bunches, these are then transported to the winery in small refrigerated boxes that ensures the grapes remain intact.
Once it has undergone alcoholic and melolactic fermentation, there is a new selection. Only the best wines are chosen for the aging.
The aging takes place for 72 months in American oak barrels, 20% are new and the rest are four years old, manufactured by hand by the cooperage in the winery.
After applying 12 racking, there is a new selection. Only the best barrels become a part of this coupage of Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva. A great selection that ends up with only 15,900 bottles produced.
Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva does not pass through any filtering system, they intend to preserve all of its aromas.
Selection, selection and more selection with a 6 year aging in the barrel makes this wine stand out as one of the great classics in La Rioja.

The Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva 2010 is a red wine that on the nose unveils the quintessential bouquet of Rioja. It reveals scents of cherry jam and black plum compote, complemented by nuances of tobacco leaf, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, and cocoa powder. On the palate, its sophistication is evident in a silky texture and polished tannins, delivering a profound and lingering taste that mirrors its distinguished maturation. This red wine exudes a congenial vivacity, complexity, and well-rounded character.

2001 | On the palate it is sophisticated, silky, structured and balanced. It has well worked, elegant and fine tannins. Long and complex after taste. A medium-robe; by sight it is a ruby colour with an orange colour on the rim which is proportionate to the long barrel aging. Very rich aromas. Subtle balsamic, coco and vanilla notes with chocolate and mature fruit. |
|
1998 | Very elegant on the palate. Structured, balanced. Very polished, silky tannins. Cherry red colour. Medium-robe. Very intense. Spices, leather, cocoa, tobacco and vanilla with fruit jam. |
|
1995 | The attack is sweet, with good structure and balanced components, with silky tannins and notes of fruit provided during its long ageing in barrels and bottles. Lingering, complex aftertaste. Very long and elegant wine. Ruby reflections. Dense legs. Typical ageing aromas (toasted, vanilla) with a good background of good ripe fruit (red and black) that emerges along with balsamic touches. |
|
1994 | The attack is greedy, enveloping, good structure, balanced in its components, with silky tannins result of its long aging in cask and bottle. Persistent complex aftertaste. Very long wine, great life and to be regarded as one of the great Riojas of this crop. This vintage is characterized by its tile red, with gold edging on the rim of the glass and a layer of color darker than previous harvest. Intense initial flavor, with an elegant bouquet in his long tenure in the bottle. Toasted and balsamic notes, with hints of vanilla and cinnamon with a background of ripe fruit. |
