About Mar de Frades Albariño
If there is something that defines Galicia, it is its wealth of history, culture, and traditions. A region that, with its Camino de Santiago, the bagpipes resonating at festivals, the muiñeiras inviting us to dance, and its beautiful Galician language, always has something special to offer. And, of course, its white wines, fresh and vibrant, captivating us with every sip.
In this landscape of winemaking tradition, Mar de Frades stands out as one of the most representative wines of Galicia. A unique, fresh, and alluring white wine that offers us the finest expression of the most famous Galician grape: the albariño. But Mar de Frades doesn't just win us over with its flavour. Its iconic blue bottle has a very special feature: its thermochromic label. Yes, you read that correctly! When the bottle reaches the ideal serving temperature, a ship appears on the label, a subtle sign indicating that it is the perfect moment to enjoy it.
The magic of Mar de Frades begins at the Finca Valiñas, a vineyard over 20 years old planted on terraces to the south of Mount Valiñas, in the heart of the Salnés Valley (D.O. Rías Baixas). The nearby Ría de Arousa provides a sea breeze that imbues the wine with a unique saline character, typical of the area. The vines are trellised to protect the grapes from the soil's moisture, which, composed of decomposed granite sands, imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine. Throughout the process, careful attention is paid: the harvest is done by hand, and a rigorous selection of the grapes is carried out, discarding up to 20-25% of the crop. Maceration lasts between 10 and 20 hours, and after a gentle pressing, the must is obtained clean, aromatic, and ready for a slow fermentation at a controlled temperature.
In Mar de Frades, one finds not only the taste but also the essence of Galicia: its sea, its land, and its winemaking soul. A wine that is not only enjoyed but experienced. And if you ever wonder if it's the perfect moment to savour it, don't worry... the bottle will tell you!
