About Gómez Cruzado Montes Obarenes
Montes Obarenes is a white wine made from Tempranillo Blanco and Viura grapes and produced by the Gómez Cruzado winery in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.
Gómez Cruzado has its origins in the 19th century (1886) when a Mexican nobleman Ángel Gómez de Arteche decided to produce wines in the Barrio de la Estación de Haro (Rioja Alavesa). These were fine wines bottled and aged in barrels in the French style, and marketed and exported by train. The winery is currently run by David González and Juan Antonio Leza, two winemakers with long professional careers to draw upon.
Gómez Cruzado practises sustainable and reasonable winegrowing. In the case of the white wine Montes Obarenes, the Tempranillo Blanco and Viura varieties come from a single pago whose soils are clay-calcareous, with a high limestone content provided by the Obarenes Mountains (Burgos). The grapes are harvested by hand and placed into 20kg boxes.
To produce the white wine Gómez Cruzado Montes Obarenes, the bunches are selected, fermented and aged with their lees for 12 months (80% in new French oak barrels and 20% in concrete ‘eggs’).
Gómez Cruzado Montes Obarenes is a white wine created in the heart of Rioja that is great for keeping.
