Georges Descombes Régnié Vieilles Vignes 2018 is a smooth red wine with a beautiful nose of small red fruits, citrus notes and hints of spice. On the palate it is fine, elegant and avid. A wonderfully balanced and fresh wine with hints of graphite and a refined and pleasant finish.

About Georges Descombes Régnié Vieilles Vignes

Georges Descombes Régnié Vieilles Vignes is a natural, wood-aged Beaujolais. This is a Gamay red wine produced in the AOC Régnié (France) by Georges Descombes.

Considered one of the Beaujolais greats, Georges Descombes has been making a name for himself in the area since he took over the family estate in the hamlet of Vermont, northeast of Villié-Morgon. This is where he follows in the footsteps of the great master of minimal intervention Marcel Lapierre, and produces cuvées with soul that reflect the most authentic Beaujolais spirit.  

With a total of 15 hectares spread over Brouilly, Régnié, Morgon, Beaujolais Villages, Beaujolais and Chiroubles, Georges Descombes Régnié Vieilles Vignes comes from plots located in Régnié. These are old vines with very limited yields that are cultivated according to organic principles and using biodynamic treatments. The grapes are harvested by hand in whole bunches.

In the winery, the Georges Descombes Régnié Vieilles Vignes grapes are pressed very slowly in an old vertical press with precise pressure control, followed by spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and a long semi-carbonic maceration at a low temperature. The wine then ages in used French oak barrels for 12 months. Finally the wine is bottled without refining or filtering and a minimal amount, or no sulphur is added.

Possibly the lightest wine from this Beaujolais master, Georges Descombes Régnié Vieilles Vignes is a deliciously subtle, delicately elegant red wine.
