About Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico dal Re

Feudi di San Gregorio, one of the most important wineries in southern Italy, currently has 700 plots of its own vineyards spread over 300 hectares. This company, founded after a major earthquake in 1986, is found in Sorbo Serpico, a town in the province of Avellino (in Campania), which is famous for its wines. The Romans knew the qualities of this area and now, always focused on the local tradition and culture, Feudi San Gregorio strives to maintain and reflect the virtues of each plot in each of their wines. This is how the Selezioni collection was born, which includes Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico dal Re.

The 4 hectares of Vigneto dal Re give their name to this single-variety Aglianico (a variety native to the area) grown within the D.O.C. Irpina Aglianico. Here, at the foot of the Apennines, the volcanic soils stand out, and the vineyards lie on mountain slopes between 400 and 700 metres above sea level. Grown here, this variety reveals a great depth and elegance, long aging and great flavour (which gives it direct entry into the select club of great Italian reds). With this status, Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico dal Re finds itself among great northern reds like Barolo and Barbaresco.

Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico dal Re undergoes alcoholic fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks for 2 to 3 weeks. This step is key, because during this time, when the wine is in contact with the skins, the maximum colour is extracted. Finally, Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico dal Re spends half a year in French oak barrels (medium toast) and another half year in the bottle, where it will rest and evolve into its most powerful state. It starts with red fruits (cherries, raspberries) and evolves towards liquorice and sweet spices. The palate is delicate and balanced, with sweet tannins. Long and penetrating finish.
