About Château Clos du Roy

When M. Philippe Hermouet, an agronomist by training, took over Clos du Roy, which had been owned by his in-laws until then, in 1987, little did he imagine that his life would change so much. Discovering his skills as a winegrower day by day in one of the smallest wine-growing regions in the Bordeaux vineyard has turned his profession into a passion. So much so that he has long been an active member of the wine union and has made his project one of Fronsac’s sure assets. More than 30 years of experience and observation have enabled him to make the most of the terroirs and produce great wines like this Château Clos du Roy.

With 22 hectares in the town of Saillans, in Fronsac (Bordeaux), the vineyards grow over clay and limestone hills and plateaus. Vines with an average age of 30 years old, planted on a gentle slope and with perfect exposure, to create a wine that expresses the richness and complexity of the great Fronsac vineyards. This is the case of Château Clos du Roy, a red wine made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the vineyard, they work with integrated vineyard protection using a global, modern and, above all, sustainable approach. Once the grapes have been selected, destemmed and taken to the winery, they ferment in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels (1/3 new) and spends a minimum of 12 months there before bottling.

With more than 30 vintages under his belt, Hermouet has not only been able to evolve in technique without losing the Bordeaux style, but he has also been able to transmit it in a worldly way. Thanks to him, a new generation involved in the life of the estate has ensured the production of Clos du Roy, a rich, complex, naturally powerful wine that is very suitable for aging. A great wine to discover the best of the AOC Fronsac.
