About Domaine Santa Duc Côtes-du-Rhône Les Quatre Terres
Majestic, silent, almost invisible... the eagle owl —the grand duke— soars over the hills of the southern Rhône by night. It is a noble and enigmatic bird, with a keen gaze and a serene flight. In Provençal, it is known as Canta Duc, "the one who sings," and it has ultimately lent its name to one of the most esteemed estates in Gigondas: Santa Duc.
But here, it is not merely a symbol. There is something profoundly sacred in these landscapes. In the way the vine entwines itself upon miocene safre soils, red limestone, or alluvial clays. In how each plot, each corner, expresses a distinct voice of the same land. The estate —like the bird— observes, listens, and translates. Since 1985, Yves Gras has guided this project with vision and sensitivity, early on committing to organic farming and reclaiming forgotten plots. His son, Benjamin, trained in Burgundy and the natural heir to this respectful outlook, has steered the vineyard towards biodynamics and expanded its reach to other sacred villages of the southern Rhône, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
One of the most expressive outcomes of this approach is Domaine Santa Duc Côtes-du-Rhône Les Quatre Terres, a wine that blends grapes from four distinct terroirs: Vacqueyras, Rasteau, Roaix, and Séguret. Some plots are classified as Crus, others as Villages, but all speak the same language: that of the living, nurtured, and heeded earth.
The blend —dominated by Grenache and accompanied by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Carignan— undergoes a slow fermentation with minimal intervention. The ageing takes place in large oak barrels and terracotta amphorae for 18 months and is finally bottled without fining or filtering, ensuring the wine retains all its energy intact.
Like the grand duke that lends its name to the estate, Domaine Santa Duc Côtes-du-Rhône Les Quatre Terres does not need to raise its voice to command attention. It is a silent prayer to the landscape, serene yet profound, crafted with wisdom and respect. It does not shout, but when it sings —in the glass, at the table, in memory— its echo resounds magnificently.
2022 | Domaine Santa Duc Côtes-du-Rhône Les Quatre Terres 2022 exhibits a brilliant ruby hue that beckons you to delve into its aromatic intricacy. Upon bringing the glass to your nose, lively notes of fruits such as raspberry and black cherry emerge, interwoven with delicate floral nuances. On the palate, this wine reveals a smooth yet firm structure, where the tannins are subtly and elegantly present, providing good persistence. The Mediterranean character is manifested in an undertone of garrigue, evoking memories of wild herbs. Recommended for those seeking a balanced and aromatic wine. |
