About Domaine Santa Duc Châteauneuf-du-Pape Habemus Papam
There are phrases that, despite being Latin, require no translation. “Habemus Papam” is one such phrase. Each time the curtain of the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica is drawn back and the cardinal protodeacon utters those words, the Catholic world holds its breath: “we have a pope”. It is the solemn announcement of a new beginning, of a momentous election.
And what better place to christen a wine with that name than in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the historic appellation in the southern Rhône whose very name evokes the papacy? There, in this land of vineyards and sun-rounded stones, the wine Habemus Papam from Domaine Santa Duc is born. A creation that not only pays homage to the papal history of the region but also heralds, in its own way, an equally significant choice: the new direction of the winery under the leadership of Benjamin Gras.
The choice of name is no coincidence. Just as Rome selects its spiritual leader, Santa Duc has chosen its own path towards a new vinous era, embodied in the figure of Benjamin. After honing his skills at two of the world's most legendary estates—Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy and Vega Sicilia in Ribera del Duero—Benjamin returns home with a clear vision: to further elevate the prestige of the family wines by respecting nature and enhancing the terroirs.
And he is succeeding. The estate, founded in 1874, has witnessed six generations of the Gras family. Since 2016, the vineyards have been certified biodynamic, and Benjamin adheres to a philosophy of minimal intervention in the winery, with no fining or filtering. Here, the wine is allowed to speak for itself. And in the case of Domaine Santa Duc Châteauneuf-du-Pape Habemus Papam, it speaks with a deep and charismatic voice.
Domaine Santa Duc Châteauneuf-du-Pape Habemus Papam emerges from the sandy clay-rich soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a limestone subsoil and those iconic rounded stones that absorb the sun's heat and release it at night, as if they too were praying for a good maturation. Crafted from Grenache and Syrah, two varieties that here find their cathedral, they are cultivated organically and with biodynamic treatments, and the harvest is done by hand at the optimal moment of ripeness. Then, in the winery, fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and ageing takes place over 18 months in large Stockinger oak foudres and terracotta amphorae, blending tradition with modernity. Finally, at bottling, it is unfiltered, unembellished. It is presented as it is.
Like a true pontiff of wine, Domaine Santa Duc Châteauneuf-du-Pape Habemus Papam is a powerful red, yet balanced; elegant, yet full of character. It is not just a playful nod to ecclesiastical history. It is, above all, a wine with identity, with roots, and with a promising future.
2021 | Domaine Santa Duc Châteauneuf-du-Pape Habemus Papam 2021 boasts an impressive and intricate character. On the nose, it unfurls intense aromas of black fruits such as blackberries and plums, accompanied by a subtle hint of spices and liquorice, inviting an intriguing tasting experience. On the palate, this wine displays fine, well-integrated tannins that impart an elegant body and refined structure. Its finish is long and harmonious, leaving a sensation of continuous satisfaction. Due to its aromatic concentration and perfect balance, it is an outstanding choice for those seeking a wine with depth and sophistication, ideal for sharing special moments. |
