About Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Aux Lieux-Dits
Among the many time-honoured terms that adorn the labels of great French wines, there is one with a particular charm: lieu-dit. Literally meaning "said place," it is, in fact, much more than that. These are sites with their own names, small plots recognised for their unique characteristics—geological, historical, or cultural—christened and tended by generations of winemakers.
The wine Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Aux Lieux-Dits is precisely inspired by this spirit. It is crafted from grapes sourced from eight different lieux-dits within the Gigondas appellation in the Rhône Valley. It is not a single-vineyard wine, but something even more intriguing: a choral expression of the region, a collective portrait of the soul of Gigondas. A great village wine, with all the richness of nuances offered by its diverse soils and exposures.
At the foot of the majestic Dentelles de Montmirail, the vineyards of Santa Duc thrive under the care of Yves Gras and his son Benjamin, the sixth generation at the helm of this historic winery founded in 1874.
Yves is a meticulous vintner, a patient observer who prefers to accompany rather than impose. His philosophy is based on giving wine time, on understanding the land before acting. His wines, generous and profound, have been recognised by critics like Robert Parker for their authenticity and character.
Since 2016, the estate has operated under the principles of biodynamics, and Benjamin—trained in Burgundy and with experience at names like Romanée-Conti or Vega Sicilia—has reinforced this nature-respecting approach, also revising the range of wines to give more prominence to local terroirs.
Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Aux Lieux-Dits is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault, aged for 18 months in large Stockinger oak barrels and terracotta amphorae. Hand harvesting, precise selection, and minimal intervention in the winery are the keys to its production.
As a result, Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Aux Lieux-Dits is a wine that combines power and elegance, structure and freshness. A bottled tribute to those places that deserve to be named... and to those who have listened to them to give them a voice in the form of wine.
