About Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Clos Derrière Vieille
Amidst the myriad of wines, labels abound that derive their names from their place of origin. But who knows where these names truly originate? Some are lost in oral tradition, others arise from geographical features, legends, or ancient customs. In the case of Clos Derrière Vieille, the name is as literal as it is evocative. It refers to the vineyard situated just behind the old town of Gigondas, hidden among limestone hills, ancient hospices, and pine groves. A secluded, almost secret place, giving life to one of the most distinctive wines of Domaine Santa Duc.
When the Gras family acquired this clos in 1994, it was in a state of neglect. It required a blend of faith, vision, and relentless effort to restore the terraces and reinstate their viticultural purpose. At an altitude of 350 metres and surrounded by 7 hectares of forest, the Cretaceous grey marl soils, rich in limestone, act as a natural reservoir for water and minerals, sustaining vines approximately 40 years old.
For the production of Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Clos Derrière Vieille, the grapes, comprising Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, are cultivated biodynamically, vinified with minimal intervention, and aged for 18 months in large Stockinger oak barrels and terracotta amphorae. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering, preserving the essence of the place to the fullest.
Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Clos Derrière Vieille is a wine that, like the landscape it is named after, unfolds slowly. It does not impose; it reveals. Beneath its apparent serenity lies a mineral depth, an unexpected freshness, and an elegance from another era. Behind the village, among stone, forest, and silence... beats the heart of Gigondas.
