About Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo

Along with Piedmont, Tuscany is one of the oldest wine-producing regions. Its Chianti, a red wine made from white and red grapes, is one of the most prestigious and well-known in the world. And although in the 60’s these wines were considered to have little body and flavour, since the mid 80's the innovation in the area has improved their quality extraordinarily, so much so that we can now find great chiantis on the best international wine lists.

One of the major contributors to this impressive improvement is undoubtedly the Mazzei family, one of Tuscany’s oldest and most powerful winemaking families, who at their impressive Castello di Fonterutoli estate, in the heart of the splendid Chianti Classico area, make wines with the complexity, power and elegance that are so characteristic of top quality Chiantis. The truth is that their contribution to the denomination is so significant that they are even thought to be responsible for the term chianti, because the first document this word appears in to describe a particular wine in 1435 is from their illustrious ancestor Ser Lapo.

In honour of this ancestor, the Mazzei family produces Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo, a wine made mainly with Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. Almost all the work is done by hand and the grapes are harvested by hand in stages in order to achieve optimum ripening of the grapes at all times. In the winery, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 26-28°C for 15-18 days and then the wine ages for 12 months in small French oak barrels before bottling.

As a tribute to a wine scholar and great lover of Tuscany, Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is one of the most representative Chianti Classico Riservas of the DOCG. Power, complexity and elegance all round.

2018

Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo 2018 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of forest fruits, notes of vanilla and hints of leather and liquorice. The palate is intense, muscular and tense. A well-structured wine with tight tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, lingering finish.
