About Weingut Seckinger Maikammer Chardonnay

Traditionally, his family sold grapes to large German wineries. Just like it’s always been. But things changed in 2012 when Jonas, Lukas and Philip decided to do something different. And that was it. They had some old vineyards, real gems that they could turn into wonderful wines like Weingut Seckinger Maikammer Chardonnay, a biodynamic and natural barrel-fermented white wine.

Based in Ruppertsberg (a small municipality in the German Palatinate) the three brothers produce their wines under the name of Weingut Seckinger. Riesling or Geürztraminer may be familiar to you in this area, but surprisingly enough, here in southwest Germany there is also a place for Chardonnay (yes, you read that right). Here, on soils dominated by red sandstone and limestone marl, the brothers cultivate the vineyards following biodynamic principles (they soon realised that this was the only way forward) and let the vines grow at their own pace, limiting themselves to guiding them and intervening when it is absolutely necessary.

These same principles are used in the winery, where the wines themselves set the pace of production. To make Weingut Seckinger Riesling Vom Löss Trocken, the grapes are processed and transferred to barrels where they ferment spontaneously with native yeasts. Weingut Seckinger Maikammer Chardonnay is aged in barrels and bottled unfiltered and unclarified.

With Weingut Seckinger and these three brothers, German wine reaches another level. Much more natural, much purer and much more authentic. Don’t miss any of their wines, but definitely don’t miss Weingut Seckinger Maikammer Chardonnay.

2022

Weingut Seckinger Chardonnay PURE 2022 is a light-coloured white wine with greenish hues. The nose is deep, with aromas of green apple and spice, pineapple and pear. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with saline touches and lots of grip. Moderate alcohol level.
