About Von Winning Kalkofen GG Riesling
There are things that are just great in themselves. All you have to do is say their name, nothing more is needed. This is true for Kalkofen, one of the most important and renowned vineyards in the Palatinate, Germany. Its importance and relevance mean it makes some of the best wines in the world, without needing to add anything else, like their Von Winning Kalkofen GG Riesling.
A lime kiln (dating from the 15th century) and the abundance of this rock type in the soil (where lime was extracted to make bricks) are the main things that inspired the name of this vineyard (mentioned for the first time in a document in 1513). Only a privileged few grow the grapes for their wines here. A select club that includes the Bassermann-Jordan, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, Kimich, Siben and Weingut von Winning wineries. The latter produces Von Winning Kalkofen GG Riesling.
Von Winning is one of the oldest wineries in Germany. This family business, founded in 1794, owns approximately 5 hectares of old vines (over 65 years old) in this vineyard of mainly limestone soils mixed with clayey loams. Its southern slope and altitude of 130 and 150 metres, are the main elements that make this terroir one of the most unique in the world.
Spontaneous fermentation in oak barrels and aging in these same tanks, on the lees, are the keys used by Von Winning to make their wines (always using organic cultivation that takes care of the environment). A dense and creamy Riesling with lots of juiciness and unctuousness.
2020 | Von Winning Kalkofen GG Riesling 2020 is a creamy, distinguished white that speaks for itself. The nose is fresh and deep, very fruity and tender, with really rich and varied nuances. On the palate it is tender and robust, very smooth and balanced, with hints of peach, quince and well-integrated vanilla. Volume and finesse, with good minerality. Light and tasty finish. |
