About Valenciso Graciano

Traditionally, Graciano has always been a native variety of the D.O. Ca Rioja. After several years of this grape losing its prominence, little by little, it has regained its former glory. It works well with Tempranillo and its excellent aging potential has made it a variety with a bright future in this area. For the time being, according to data provided by the D.O. Ca Rioja, this variety represents only 2.1% of the denomination’s vineyards... But what vineyards they are! Gradually, producers are once again using it in their productions, like Valenciso Graciano.

Valenciso Graciano is a single-variety red wine produced by Bodegas Valenciso, a company founded in 1999 in La Rioja Alta. This project was formed by the union of Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso and became a reality in the vineyards they cultivate in Ollauri, Briones, Haro, Rodezno, Gimileo, Zarratón and Villalba. Following an organic philosophy, although not certified, and at an altitude between 480 and 610 metres above sea level, the vines grow on a wide variety of soils. Specifically, this zone is divided between clayey-calcareous, clayey-ferrous and alluvial soils. The Atlantic climate, with its cold winters and mild summers, is also fundamental. At Valenciso, these vines are the jewel in the crown, and are cared for as such, always in a sustainable and integrated manner, without the use of herbicides or chemicals. Obviously these tasks, which are carried out manually, take much more time; but it does not matter, as long as the result is the one they are looking for. This vision also led them to take other decisions like lowering yields to 5,000 kilos per hectare (the denomination allows 6,500 kilos), and even not to make wines when vintages have not been satisfactory.

The manual harvest, where a first selection is made, is the starting point for the winemaking process, which will take place in cement tanks. Once converted into wine, Valenciso Graciano is aged for 16 months in Caucasian oak barrels. Finally, Valenciso Graciano is bottled and released for sale. Graciano has never been so popular.

2019

Valenciso Graciano 2019 is a concentrated red wine, cherry red in colour, with violet touches and rim. The nose is curious and complex, with notes of rubber, black fruit and balsamic touches. The palate is savoury and intense, with fruit and sweet tannins. Vibrant, but very fine and elegant. Spicy nuances (paprika, saffron). Warm finish.
