Ronco Severo Merlot is a natural, wood-aged red wine made by Ronco Severo with the Merlot variety in the DOP Colli Orientali del Friuli, in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Located in Prepotto, in the province of Udine, Ronco Severo is a historical winery founded by the grandfather of the current owner Stefano Novello. He gave the winery this name because of how difficult it was to plant the vines on rock terraces. Stefano has changed the winemaking method and philosophy to create natural productions that reflect his work and the local area.
The Ronco Severo Merlot grapes come from a small vineyard of about 2.90 hectares planted in 1972 in rocky marl land. No chemical products are used and intervention in the vineyard is reduced to a minimum. The harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness.
In the winery, the Ronco Severo Merlot grapes undergo a long maceration on the skins and a fermentation with native yeasts and no added sulphites. The wine is then aged for 6 months in 500-litre French oak barrels for 6 months and then in the bottle for a while longer.
Ronco Severo Merlot is a red wine made with old-fashioned artisan methods. A pure Merlot that is faithful to its Friuli origins.
