About Penfolds Grange Hermitage

Although this is not the story of Coca-Cola, there are a few parallels. Just like the world’s most international soft drink was created by pharmacist John Pemberton as a medicinal beverage, Dr. Christofer Rawson Penfold also started making his first concoctions in 1845 with the aim of prescribing them to his patients suffering from anemia. What he made was a fortified wine that he created from the vines he planted himself on the estate where he had settled with his family when he arrived in Australia from England, specifically in Adelaide. However, “the medicine” was so successful that he was encouraged to plant more vines and to produce and perfect other wines. In a short time he succeeded like Coca Cola did, becoming the largest and most qualified wine producer in the country.

But if Penfolds stands out for one thing, it is for creating the spectacular Grange Hermitage. A wine that was first produced in 1950 by Max Shubert, the “Chief Winemaker” at the time, who, with the aim of improving the quality of still wines, blended grapes from the best vineyards and the best wine-growing regions. This is a Syrah wine with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon that clearly demonstrates the synergy between the fruit and the soils and climates of South Australia. The vineyards are respectfully cultivated using organic methods and are not harvested until they reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the grapes macerate and ferment carefully in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures and then the wine ages in French and American oak barrels for 18 months.

The result is Penfolds Grange Hermitage, Australia’s most celebrated wine, with the unique style that Penfolds has guarded throughout its 175 years and that now, the current Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, Peter Gago, knows how to maintain down to the smallest detail. The perfect balance between structure, density and freshness. Undoubtedly an icon of South Australia’s heritage and a wine collector’s dream.

2016

Penfolds Grange Hermitage 2016 is a legendary wine from an exceptional vintage. A real explosion on the senses with aromas of black forest fruits combined with notes of dark chocolate and mocha and spicy touches. On the palate it is concentrated, sweet and very elegant. A powerful, full-bodied wine with round tannins, a tight acid balance and a comforting sensation of freshness. A stimulating experience from the first to the final sip!
