About Paul Chavy Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
The legend behind the name Corton-Charlemagne in Burgundy traces back to Emperor Charlemagne, who, according to tradition, owned the hill of Corton. It is said that in medieval times, Charlemagne ordered the vineyards to be planted solely with white grape varieties, as these were his wife's preferred wines. Thus, chardonnay began to dominate the landscape and, over time, became the only grape variety permitted in the appellation. This vineyard, situated in a unique and privileged terroir, is now synonymous with some of the finest white wines in the world.
One of the region's most prestigious négociants, Paul Chavy, has expertly capitalised on this singular terroir, crafting Paul Chavy Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a wine that perfectly reflects the exceptional nature of this exclusive vineyard. With a masterful ability to blend Burgundian tradition with modern techniques, Paul continues the legend, offering a wine that is both a tribute to the past and a vibrant expression of the present.
Originating from vineyards located at the summit of the Corton hill, where the limestone and clay subsoil imparts character and minerality, the grapes for Paul Chavy Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru are cultivated with the utmost respect for the environment and harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness. In the winery, vinification is carried out with meticulous precision: the wine ages for 11 months in barrels, 40-50% of which are new, providing structure and elegance. It then spends another 7 months in stainless steel tanks, preserving its purity, freshness, and finesse.
The result is Paul Chavy Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a wine that masterfully embodies the elegance and complexity of the exceptional Corton-Charlemagne terroir. Its authentic and sublime character pays homage to the grandeur of Emperor Charlemagne and the timeless perfection of this legendary vineyard, offering an unparalleled expression of one of Burgundy's most prestigious Grand Crus.
