About Niepoort Tiara Branco

Niepoort Tiara Branco is a white wine classified as a DOC Douro and made by the Niepoort winery, which is over one hundred years old.

Niepoort is a Portuguese winery that was founded in 1842 and is currently run by Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation of the family it is named after. They use traditional Portuguese techniques such as grape treading, fermentation in cement tanks or aging in pipes, 550-litre port-aging barrels, whilst also using new technologies that ensure the grapes are handled with care. The winery has vines in different locations, some of which are over 100 years old, and an aging cellar in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Niepoort Tiara Branco vines are planted in shale soils and the vines are 40, 60 and 100 years old. They sit about 600-800 meters above sea level and the planting density is about 6,500 plants per hectare. They are trained using the Guyot or Cordon de Royat system and are harvested manually.

The Niepoort Tiara Branco grape is re-selected in the winery and then fermented in large barrels with natural yeasts and then also undergoes malolactic fermentation. In total, the wine sits in the vats for a full year.

Niepoort Tiara Branco is a fresh and elegant wine that sits in large vats for a year.

2016 Niepoort Tiara Branco 2016 has a moderate, aromatic and slightly austere profile, however it is very complex and deep thanks to its long fermentation in wooden vats. It is subtle and elegant, balanced, with notes of white fruit and fresh herbs over a mineral background. It has great structure that is complemented with a vibrant acidity that gives it delicacy and great precision. It can be enjoyed young, but it also ages extremely well in the bottle.
