About Mazzei Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
You have undoubtedly encountered references to Chianti in films, songs, and other cultural manifestations on more than one occasion. These references not only highlight the popularity of Chianti but also underscore its status as an iconic and globally cherished wine. What you might not know is that the first historical record mentioning the term "Chianti" is found in a document written by Ser Lapo Mazzei in 1398, a Florentine notary with a passion for wine who documented the significance of Chianti in the Tuscany region (Italy) centuries ago. This legacy was solidified when his niece married Piero di Agnolo da Fonterutoli, and the Fonterutoli estate became part of the family heritage. Today, 24 generations later, the Mazzei family continues to produce wine at Castello di Fonterutoli, and although production and quality have evolved significantly since that time, the influence of Ser Lapo Mazzei remains at the heart of the project.
From this legacy, Mazzei Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a red wine crafted from the principal variety of the DOCG Chianti Classico, Sangiovese, with a small percentage of other red varieties (Colorino and Malvasia Nera). Grapes from 11 different parcels situated at an altitude of 420-510 meters around the village of Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti are selected and hand-harvested, then vinified through a process of fermentation and maceration at controlled temperatures. Afterwards, the wine rests in small oak barrels of 225 and 500 litres (60% new) for approximately 18 months. Finally, it is bottled and aged in the cellar for further refinement in glass before being released to the market.
From the oldest cru of the winery, in the "château" style, Mazzei Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a true Chianti Classico. A profound, full-bodied, and enduring wine that indelibly links the Mazzei family with Tuscany and its wine since the 11th century.
