About Mas Candí Macabeu Brut Nature
Since time immemorial, in many Catalan villages, people are not only recognised by their first and last name, but also by the house in which they were born. This deeply rooted tradition is so strong that, instead of using surnames, it is common to refer to individuals by the name of their farmhouse. Therefore, it is unsurprising that many family wine projects bear the name of the house that gave them origin. In the case of Mas Candí, a winery located in Les Gunyoles d’Avinyonet, at the heart of Alt Penedès (Catalonia), its founders decided in 2006 to honour this custom by naming their project after the farmhouse where they produce their wines and sparkling wines: Mas Candí. Today, under the stewardship of Ramón Jané, this charming winery has gained international recognition for its synergy with the landscape and for working with revived indigenous varieties. Situated very close to the Parc Natural del Garraf, a unique setting that offers exceptional conditions for viticulture (limestone soils and a dry Mediterranean climate), their creations are a true homage to their roots and the surrounding environment.
Such is their connection with the landscape that even their sparkling wines are part of Corpinnat, a collective brand that brings together sparkling wine producers committed to excellence and sustainability in the heart of the Penedès. This is how Mas Candí Macabeu Brut Nature was born, a Corpinnat sparkling wine made with the macabeo variety from a vineyard planted in 1975, cultivated organically without any chemical fertilisers, fungicides, or pesticides, and harvested by hand at the optimal moment of ripeness. In the winery, after selecting, destemming, and pressing the grapes, the obtained must undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, this base wine undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle, following the méthode champenoise, where it remains for 7 years. Finally, it is disgorged without adding any expedition liqueur.
Without additives or artifices, Mas Candí Macabeu Brut Nature is the ultimate expression of macabeo, the terroir, and the passion for crafting wines that speak of their origin with honesty and character. A gem for those seeking to discover the deepest soul of the Penedès.
