About Macán Clásico
Macán Clásico is a single-variety Tempranillo red wine produced by the Benjamín de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia winery in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.
Two great names in international winemaking join forces to create a wine that seeks harmony by expressing its roots and uniting tradition and modernity. This is how Macán Clásico was born, through a world-class collaboration between Benjamín de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, established in Rioja Alavesa where they have a winery in a place known as San Millán, in the town of Samaniego.
This special location not only produces excellent quality wines but is also committed to sustainability and respect for the environment, something that the Benjamín de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia winery has taken on by sensitively integrating its facilities with the landscape. They have three separate warehouses for each stage of the winemaking process: production, aging and dispatching, and each named after the basic elements of nature: water, earth and sun. A statement of intent.
The Macán Clásico grape come from plots of more than 30 years old that are harvested under strict quality and selection standards to guarantee the quality of the wines.
Macán Clásico and his older brother, Macán, are together from the beginning because they are made using the same process. They undergo malolactic fermentation together, 70% in stainless steel tanks and 30% in barrels, then age in new, fine and extra-fine grain French wood barrels. A minimum amount of the resulting wine is put through one-year-old barrels.
This process of making the wines together is through a desire to emulate the Bordeaux tradition of producing a first and a second wine. This coexistence ends at the classification tasting where the wines from the harvest that are closest and most expressive are chosen to make the Macán Clásico.
This apparent simplicity creates a wine that reflects the character of the land but is also accessible, easy to drink and retains the hallmark of elegance that sets apart these two great winemakers: Rothschild and Vega Sicilia.
