The Siena region of Tuscany is known for its impressive hilly and mountainous landscape. Passo del Lume Spento is a scenic route that offers the opportunity to enjoy the panoramic views and challenging climbs that are typical of the area. This is where Riccardo Campinoti, a promising young winemaker, produces Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino, a real gem that has the unique characteristic of being grown at the highest point of the entire Montalcino area, at about 600 metres above sea level.
It all began in 2002 when Riccardo decided to buy an ancient 28-hectare estate in the county of Montalcino, in the province of Siena, called Ragnaie (the name the Etruscans gave to the nets used to catch birds). This is where he began to cultivate old vineyards at high altitude following the principles of organic agriculture. The vines grow alongside other fruit trees, and pastures ensure a lively ecosystem develops. Because of the altitude, harvesting is late and is done by hand. In the winery, the grapes are destemmed and placed on a vibrating table to select the best ones. The maceration and fermentation processes are carried out in cement tanks where the wine stays for 25 to 40 days. It is then aged in 25 hl Slovenian oak barrels and 2.25 hl Allier oak barrels where it rests for 36-48 months and is finally refined in the bottle before release.
As the highest Brunello di Montalcino, Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino is characterised by a exceptional freshness. A high-flying wine from a winemaker who, according to the prestigious Wine Advocate magazine, is one of the most promising in Montalcino.
2018 | Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of ripe red and black fruit, accompanied by notes of pressed violets and hints of licorice. On the palate, it is delicate, silky, and elegant. A medium to full-bodied wine with velvety tannins, lively acidity, and well-integrated alcohol content. A refined wine with good tannic structure and a long and persistent finish. |
