About Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG
From the DOCG Chianti Rufina, the smallest in the denomination, comes Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG, the first wine from Fattoria Selvapiana.
Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG is the fundamental pillar that sustains the production of this legendary Italian house. Emerging during the Middle Ages as a watchtower and defense for the city of Florence, this enclave was a summer resort for bishops and noble Florentine families. This was the case until 1826, when it was acquired by the banker Michele Giunti, who has handed it down from generation to generation until today. Now, with 250 hectares, the property (which is divided across the municipalities of Rufina, Pelago and Pontassieve), is managed by Silvia and Federico Masseti (the latest generation).
The history of Fattoria Selvapiana is indisputable. However, if this winery is famous for one thing, it is for being the first to produce red wines using just Sangiovese. The idea came from Francesco Giunti, who ran the business between 1957 and 1997, managing to express all the value of this area of central Italy with this wine. In particular, the Fattoria Selvapiana vineyards extend along the slopes of the Apennines. This location, right in the hills, creates a microclimate with cool summers and a significant temperature difference between day and night. This causes the grapes to ripen slowly, achieving a good balance and a very tasty acidity.
After the harvest, which is carried out partly by hand and partly with machinery, the Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG grapes are taken to the winery and vatted directly in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation will begin spontaneously using native yeasts. After some time, the yeasts will stop their work and Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG, now wine, will remain in contact with the skins for about 25 days (with corresponding pumping over). Finally, Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG is transferred to French oak barrels where it will rest for about ten months (approximately) until it becomes one of the best wines we can recommend.
2021 | Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG 2021 is a concentrated red wine. Black fruit, cherry, ripe raspberry and hints of citrus (wild orange) appear on the nose. The palate is very elegant, with very fine tannins and fruity flavours. Lingering, smooth and fresh finish. |
