About Fabio Coullet Villazo
The work of winegrowers, year after year, is dictated by the changing climate, the soil and the natural challenges they face when it comes to vine cultivation. If we add to this the inherent geological difficulties, we are faced with what is known as heroic viticulture. From steep slopes to rocky terrain, winemakers are forced to face extremely difficult conditions to grow grapes and produce exceptional wines. Fabio Coullet founded his own project in La Axarquia, a unique place east of Malaga (Spain) that is surrounded by steep mountains. A winery that brings out the best of this rugged region with minimum intervention and maximum authenticity.
Fabio Coullet Villazo, a wine that comes from a single vineyard called Pago Villazo, is born from a terroir with slopes of up to 70%. A total of 6 hectares lying at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level with old vines planted on slate schist soils. 50-year-old Muscat of Alexandria vines that are organically cultivated without the use of chemicals. The grapes are harvested by hand and in the winery they are destemmed and gently pressed. The resulting must is fermented in steel tanks with native yeasts for 15 days in contact with its lees and without batonnage. The wine then ages for 4 months in new 225-litre French oak barrels. Finally, it is bottled without clarification or cold treatment.
This is how Fabio Coullet Villazo interprets the abrupt landscape of La Axarquía. A wine from the D.O. Málaga-Sierras de Málaga that is highly exclusive, saturated with Mediterranean nuances and evoking the authenticity of terroir and passion.
2021 | Fabio Coullet Villazo 2021 is an elegant white wine with a mineral character and evocations of roses, tea notes and soft hints of coconut on the nose. When tasted, it highlights the vigorous presence of vineyard peach, offering a broad and balanced mouthfeel, marked by a notable and pleasant acidity. |
