About Casa Balaguer El Carro de la Mata
El Carro de la Mata is a natural orange wine macerated with skins, crafted by Casa Balaguer-Vinessens using the moscatel variety in the D.O. Alicante (Comunidad Valenciana).
Casa Balaguer-Vinessens was established in 2017 when Andrés Carull and Marta Ribera, the winemakers of Vinessens, took over the production of wines at Casa Balaguer, the winery of Rafa Bernabé. By preserving the essence of the two initial projects, they have achieved a delightful collection of natural wines “made in Alicante” that are exceptionally expressive and original.
El Carro de la Mata originates from vineyards located in the La Mata Natural Park, in the Alicante town of Vilella. Vines with an average age of 30 years, planted in sandy and saline soils, and very close to the Mediterranean Sea. A respectful approach to agriculture is practised, and harvesting is done manually at the peak of ripeness.
Half of the must for El Carro de la Mata is spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks for 4 to 6 months, while the other half is aged in new 500-litre French oak barrels exposed to the elements for 4 to 6 months without undergoing batonnage. Finally, it is bottled without filtering or clarifying.
El Carro de la Mata is the result of traditional and artisanal agriculture, born from a collection of cultural vineyards saved from real estate speculation. A highly original orange wine, suitable for the most discerning palates.
