About Ata Rangi Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc
Ata Rangi Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc is an organic barrel-aged white wine produced by the Ata Rangi winery with the Sauvignon Blanc variety in the Wellington area (New Zealand).
Located in the town of Martinborough, the name of this family winery means “sky at dawn” in Maori and was inspired by a study that showed that the soils and climate in this area were very similar to those in Burgundy. Then, in 1980, the Paton family decided to plant their own vineyards and produce premium wines. This has been a long process, and 30 years later, they have become a leading producer of Pinot Noir wineries in the New World. These are powerful and concentrated wines with an Antarctic influence.
Specifically, Ata Rangi Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc comes from old vines cultivated fully according to ecological practices. These include the use of composting, maintaining the population of native insects and birds and growing wild plants between the strains, to help the terroir self-regulate without damaging its natural balance. And because it is also an area with high winds and low rainfall, there is no danger of moisture diseases spreading. This results in limited productions of small but concentrated grapes, which are harvested by hand at the optimum time.
The Ata Rangi Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc grapes are immediately crushed cold and vinified with four different fermentations. For some of the time, it is left to ferment in a stainless steel tank. Then, after 10% has fermented with skins for 8 weeks, and 4% has fermented in whole cluster for 4 weeks, it is gently pressed to ferment in the barrel. Finally, 40% ferments in barrels without adding sulphur. Some malolactic fermentation takes place in the barrel.
A name that means “woven” in Maori, Ata Rangi Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine that shows the complex and textural style that is typical of the Martinborough region. An attractive combination of spices and appealing acidity.
2019 | Ata Rangi Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is an aromatic white wine, endowed with scents of grapefruit, guava, papaya, and mint. On the palate, it is exceedingly complex, presenting a rich tapestry of flavors ranging from ginger and lemon to cinnamon. Harmoniously balanced. Robust and full-bodied. The finish is prolonged and lingering. |

2017 | Ata Rangi Raranga Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is an aromatic white wine with citrus fragrances, apple pie notes and a herbaceous background. On the palate it is complex and textured. It has an acidic and fresh entrance, an enveloping and vivid mid-palate and a creamy and spicy finish. |
