About Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso

The vineyards of Ar.Pe.Pe., in northern Italy (in Lombardy), are often teeming with robins. It's not unusual to find these little birds flitting among the vines that this winery owns in the heart of Valtellina. That's their territory. But things changed. One day, while Isabella Pelizzatti (the company's oenologist) was working in the winery, one of these birds slipped into the premises. Innocently —or so it seemed— the tiny creature perched on an old wooden barrel. However, it appeared as though it wanted to warn of something. A few days later, while examining that very barrel, Isabella discovered a small leak between the staves. The wine had to be bottled swiftly with barely twelve months of ageing. Thus, Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso was born.

The existence of Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso is owed to a little bird. Despite not having rested for the originally intended duration, Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso is a remarkably flavourful red. Perhaps one of the finest in Italy. It's important to remember that these reds, crafted from the nebbiolo grape, are what uphold the reputation of this northern Italian region, parallel to the Alps. Specifically, this mountain range is one of the primary factors that define the terroir of this area, which is also influenced by the warm breezes from Lake Como. In total, Ar.Pe.Pe. cultivates 13 hectares of vineyards here, spread across terraces in the heart of the D.O.C. Valtellina Superiore, between Buglio in Monte and Tirano. In the case of Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso, the grapes grow on a south-facing plot, at an altitude between 400 and 500 metres.

At the winery, Ar.Pe.Pe. is renowned for its extended macerations. And so it is with Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso. After the manual harvest, where workers even climb the slopes, the grapes are processed, crushed, and placed into a wooden vat where they will macerate for 116 days. During this time, the grape skins will impart anthocyanins to the must. This latter substance is a polyphenol found in the grape skin, responsible for giving the berries their reddish hue. In this way, with continuous contact, two things are achieved: firstly, an increase in the intensity of the wine's colour and aroma; secondly, the creation of a wine rich in polyphenols (which are antioxidants) that will help Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso withstand lengthy ageing.

Once the maceration is complete, Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso ferments with indigenous yeasts, without any intervention, and will rest for 12 months in wooden vats. For a wine to be classified under the DOC Valtellina Superiore, it must undergo a total of 24 months of ageing (with a minimum of twelve in wood). In the case of Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso, it has already achieved this. Now, only another twelve months in the bottle remain before it is released for sale.

Despite its modernisation and facilities, Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Il Pettirosso remains one of the wineries that best preserves the traditional style of Valtellina.
