About Abadal Mandó

Mandó is a historical variety from Catalonia that is widely cultivated in the D.O. Pla de Bages. According to a document from 1901, this variety, which can cope very well with high temperatures, was already being cultivated in the area in the 20th century; however, the revolution in the textile industry led to a steady abandonment of these vineyards. Fortunately, this variety is now making a comeback thanks to the research work of some wineries, like Abadal, where they have decided to use this grape to make great wines. This winery was founded in 1983 and owns some old “leftover” vineyards aged over 50 years old and planted with this variety in the towns of Navás, Cardona and Rocafort (all in the Bages region). The Abadal Mandó red wine starts life here.

Abadal Mandó is the result of a recovery project that began 15 years ago. Today, this red wine has become the perfect combination of tradition and innovation, since this winery’s productions are characterised by mixing materials during fermentation and aging, using predominantly clay amphorae and barrels. This is true for Abadal Mandó which, after fermentation, rests for almost a year in ceramic amphorae and oak barrels. This detail is one of the most characteristic of this winery, as Abadal aims to maintain traditional winemaking methods using new techniques and technologies. This is the only way to extract the maximum potential from the grapes grown on the 70 hectares of land spread over different terraces, on clay and limestone soils.

2020

Abadal Mandó 2020 is a great journey. An experience for the senses. Your eyes will be delighted with its dark, opaque and dense colour. Your nose will enjoy fruit, floral aromas, a touch of undergrowth and spices (liquorice). On the palate the experience is supreme, with a balanced acidity. It is sweet and round. A fresh and elegant finish. What more could you ask for?
2019

Abadal Mandó 2019 is a juicy, ruby-coloured red with cherry highlights. The nose is very complex, varied and slightly subdued, with floral aromas intertwined with carob, undergrowth, spice, liquorice and ripe fruit. On the palate, it is very sweet. Balanced and round. Very lively and acidic finish. Fresh, elegant and mineral. Vibrant.
