About Abadal 5 Merlot
"En el pot petit hi ha la bona confitura" ("in the small jar, there is good jam"). This Catalan saying perfectly encapsulates the essence of DO Pla del Bages (Catalonia): a small denomination, yet brimming with great treasures. One of the foremost representatives of this land is Abadal. Since its inception at the Ramón Roqueta farmhouse over 800 years ago, they have tirelessly worked to enhance the viticultural terroir of Bages and convey its soul and essence.
Over the years, and through generations, Abadal has managed to preserve its essence while also modernising and adapting to contemporary times. They continue to commit to tradition, to indigenous varieties, but with a touch of innovation and expertise at every step.
One of their most iconic wines is Abadal 5 Merlot, a bold venture that selects five different clones of the merlot variety, cultivated in plots with unique characteristics yet all featuring clay presence. Each vineyard, with its particular orientation and altitude, contributes to a distinct and complex wine, vinified separately to preserve the uniqueness of each plot.
The production involves short macerations and fermentations lasting 10 days at temperature with 'pigeage' and occasionally some short pump-overs and 'délestage'. Subsequently, ageing takes place in oak barrels of French, American, and Central European origin with the aim of achieving exceptional complexity.
Abadal 5 Merlot is not only an expression of the tradition and terroir of Pla del Bages, but an innovative endeavour that breaks the moulds, precisely capturing the authentic and unique character of this land. As the saying goes: in something small, there can be a great jewel, and Abadal demonstrates this masterfully.
