About Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay
Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay is a white wine produced by the Jordan winery in the Stellenbosch Kloof district of South Africa’s Coastal Region.
The undisputed star of this wine, which spends 4 months aging on its lees, is the Chardonnay, one of the most commonly planted white varieties in the world that here grows in one of the most famous areas in the world and that currently represents a meeting point between major investments and new generations. This is where in 1982 Ted Jordan (third generation shoemaker and CEO of Jordan Shoes) and Sheelagh (his wife) bought 74 hectares of vineyards to set up the winery they named after themselves. Today, the company is run by Gal Jordan, son of the founding couple and second generation of the family, who together with his wife continues to produce very interesting wines like Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay.
The uniqueness of Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay lies specifically in the ravine where the old vines (32 years old) grow, facing southeast and fully exposed to the cooling air coming from False Bay (located about 14 km away). This is the reason why this winery’s white varieties are planted here, between 250 and 300 metres above sea level, facing the coldest breezes and enhancing the variety’s aromas. This is possible thanks to the great diversity of altitudes and microclimates in this area, where you lots of different varieties can be grown well.
This power of aromas is also highlighted in the winery, where all winemaking processes are focused on enhancing the fragrance. To do this, after the harvest, the grapes are left to macerate for two days at a low temperature before fermentation (this is to boost the aromatic power). After this, the Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay must is racked into stainless steel tanks where a selection of French yeasts are used to carry out the fermentation process. Finally, Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay spends four months on lees, with battonage and riddling, which will give it body and roundness on the palate.
