About Jordan The Cold Fact Sauvignon Blanc
In 1970, Sixto Rodríguez recorded his first album, Cold Fact, only selling six copies. However, through events that couldn’t be explained, his music reached South Africa at a time when the internet and social networks were non-existent. And there he became a musical icon. Meanwhile the South African people, who knew nothing about Sixto, wondered who the man was singing these songs. In Michigan, on the other side of the world, Sixto was dedicated to taking care of his three daughters, studying philosophy and working at a petrol station and as a bricklayer. It took almost 30 years before in 1990 Craig Bartholomew-Strydom and Steven Segarmann (nicknamed Sugar because of his last name and Sixto’s Sugar Man song) decided to find and learn the story of this singer who was completely unknown but who moved people. Finally, 28 years after his first album was released, they found him. Sixto was 56 years old at the time and made his debut in South Africa in a concert, in front of more than 5,000 people, and really rose to the occasion.
This story inspired the Jordan winery to name their white wine Jordan The Cold Fact Sauvignon Blanc, which is made with special care in the extraction of sugar through cold maceration of the Sauvignon Blanc variety. The unique quest of the sugar man from this Stellenbosch winery in the Coastal Region. This company, founded in 1986 by Ted and Sheelagh Jordan, takes special care in the production of this wine, which begins with the destemming of the grapes when they reach the winery. However, the key and critical point of the process is the pre-fermentation maceration (at low temperatures), where the skins are in contact with the must for 6 hours in order to enhance the varietal aromas and achieve the desired sugar content for this wine. After this time, Jordan The Cold Fact Sauvignon Blanc is gently pressed in a pneumatic press, and again transferred to a tank where it will rest for two days before being racked to the fermentation tank. During this time the must will be cleaned through decanting, so that all the plant debris and undesirable substances will fall to the bottom of the container (this is known as settling), thus avoiding undesirable, bitter and unpalatable flavours and aromas in the wine. Once clean (which at this point it is), Jordan The Cold Fact Sauvignon Blanc is transferred to the fermentation tank, where selected yeasts are used. Each plot and vineyard block ferments separately, at a temperature between 12ºC-16ºC.
This production method is neither casual nor random and is led by the desire to reach various goals, one of which is to maintain the good condition of the grapes and enhance the varietal aromas that are already achieved in the vineyard, at the foot of the vine. This is largely because the location of the 37-year-old vineyards in Stellenbosch Kloo, a site with different elevations and orientations, allows for the cultivation and proper ripening of varieties with totally different needs and requirements. When it comes to the white varieties (grown between 220 and 380 metres above sea level), the vineyards face east and south (both orientations are cooler than the other two), where these aromas are enhanced. This in turn is reinforced by the cold Mediterranean climate, caused by the sea currents of False Bay (14 km away) and the Benguela currents, which give these wines unique and unparalleled characteristics.
2020 | Jordan The Cold Fact Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is an aromatic white. The nose is very intense, rich and varied, with aromas of blackcurrant leaves and figs. On the palate it is refreshing and penetrating, with good acidity. Well balanced. Fresh, juicy and persistent finish. |
