About Edetària Via Edetana Garnatxa Negra/Garnatxa Peluda
The Romans were renowned for their extensive and enduring network of roads, which facilitated trade, military movements, and communication throughout the Roman Empire. These roads often connected major cities, military posts, and regions, playing a crucial role in the integration and control of the vast territories under Roman rule. The "Via Edetana" refers to an ancient Roman road that linked the city of Tortosa with Zaragoza in Spain, and not only facilitated trade and troop movements but also economic development and the spread of Mediterranean culture. A culture in which wine has always been present, and which the winemaker Joan Àngel Lliberia at his winery Edetària has sought to honour with a wine that bears the name of this road.
A passionate advocate for his land and vineyard in Gandesa, in Terra Alta (Catalonia), with Edetària Via Edetana Garnatxa Negra/Garnatxa Peluda, Joan Àngel not only showcases the long-standing viticultural tradition that has been preserved from generation to generation in this Catalan region but also the touch of creativity he imbues in each of his creations. Made from equal parts of Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Peluda varieties, it is the product of old vines planted in “tapàs” (loamy soils), “tapàs blanc” (soils with carbonate fragments), and “argil·les” (clay soil) terroirs. The vineyard is traditionally managed and, once the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are harvested and immediately transported to the winery. There, they are placed in a cold chamber for 48 hours, then carefully selected, destemmed, and crushed. Fermentation is carried out separately in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures over 15 days. Afterwards, all the wines are blended, and finally, 50% ages in French oak barrels of 350 and 500 litres for 4 months while the remaining 50% stays in stainless steel tanks with batonnage.
Although Terra Alta is not one of the most well-known denominations, Joan Àngel embraces it wholeheartedly. A place with a long vinicultural tradition that is evident in Edetària Via Edetana Garnatxa Negra/Garnatxa Peluda, a terroir-driven red wine in which its creator pours all his inherited knowledge and passion.
2022 |
Edetària Via Edetana Garnatxa Negra/Garnatxa Peluda 2022 is a barrel-aged red wine, subtly mature with a concentrated profile. On the nose, ripe red fruits such as cherries and raspberries stand out, accompanied by balsamic notes when the glass is swirled. On the palate, it is broad, luscious, and long-lasting, with sweet and rounded tannins that make it persistent. |
