About Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg
"It is not necessary to possess a vast collection of books, but rather to own a selection of quality literature." This insightful statement was not coined by us, but by the wise Seneca. At Decántalo, we resonate with his sentiment, adapting it to our own philosophy: it is far better to drink wine sparingly, but to ensure that it is of excellent quality. In adherence to this principle, we wholeheartedly recommend Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg.
Alsace and the gewürztraminer grape are a region and varietal that ought to be on your must do list. Here, in the northern reaches of France, close to the Rhine River, this grape captivates with its fragrant bouquet. It might even be ventured to say that it stands as one of the most aromatic varieties throughout Europe. Specifically, Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg originates from Altenbourg, a lieu-dit situated just below the Grand Cru Furstentum. Empirical evidence suggests that the clay-limestone soils of this hillside (within the municipality of Kientzheim) are exceptionally conducive to the cultivation of gewürztraminer. The vines thrive at an altitude ranging from 220 to 300 meters above sea level, on a gentle slope.
This vineyard, which also encompasses sandy soils, is owned by the Faller family, proprietors of Domaine Weinbach. Currently at the helm is Catherine Faller, the latest generation of this family enterprise, who also finds in her sons Eddy and Théo both support and assistance in continuing the family's legacy. Domaine Weinbach (translating to 'wine brook'), was established in 1612 by Capuchin monks. The estate, now spanning 38 hectares, remained in ecclesiastical hands until it was expropriated during the French Revolution and subsequently became state property. In 1898, the Faller brothers acquired the estate, which has since been passed down from generation to generation, with each one expanding its boundaries and consistently striving for excellence in their wines. This pursuit of quality is undoubtedly linked to their cultivation methods; Domaine Weinbach was among the first wineries to embrace organic farming, eventually making the definitive transition to biodynamic practices in 1998. This nobility is maintained in the winery as well, where they engage in minimally invasive production techniques. Like their other wines, Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg is harvested by hand, with meticulous care and a selection of the finest grapes. This step is of paramount importance, as it encapsulates a year's work in a single moment, where the team uses meal times to exchange ideas and seek improvements for future vintages. Once harvested, the grapes are gently and progressively pressed, avoiding any harsh pressure that could compromise the must's quality, devoid of any bubbles or herbaceous elements that might taint the aroma and flavor of Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg. Following this, fermentation commences, always in oak barrels – a hallmark of this esteemed winery. The influence of oak does not end there, as Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg will undergo approximately one year of aging in French oak vats.
Do not hesitate and take our advice. Secure yourself a bottle of Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg. It is an undeniable truth that life is too short to drink inferior wine.
